After conducting additional studies it was determined that the 18m sailplanes could potentially reach a maximum glide ratio of 58:1\u201d.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"405\" height=\"306\" src=\"https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/d9791169-2f9e-44ab-9270-1c92bef79640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/d9791169-2f9e-44ab-9270-1c92bef79640.jpg 405w, https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/d9791169-2f9e-44ab-9270-1c92bef79640-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/d9791169-2f9e-44ab-9270-1c92bef79640-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Picture by Idaflieg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe incorporated CFD with transition prediction turbulence models in the design process of the JS-3, resulting in most of these complex flow regions being optimized.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>A new high shoulder-wing configuration was implemented together with a highly contracted fuselage shape.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>Control horns protruding from the surface for the rudder cables were removed completely and replaced with an internal push rod system.&nbsp; &nbsp;A new high-aspect ratio fin and fin-airfoil were designed for low drag and effective rudder control.&nbsp; &nbsp;These were but a few of the aerodynamic improvements that were made to the JS3 sailplane to get closer to that theoretical 58:1 magical number.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"391\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0384f68e-154d-4bc9-8277-2458f4530a56.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11089\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0384f68e-154d-4bc9-8277-2458f4530a56.jpg 391w, https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0384f68e-154d-4bc9-8277-2458f4530a56-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jonker-sailplanes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/0384f68e-154d-4bc9-8277-2458f4530a56-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kai Weber and his keen Idaflieg team measured the performance of Matthias Sturm\u2019s JS3-18m during the sommertreffen in Stendal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Relative sink speeds at various flight velocities and flap settings were measured, with comparison flights wing-to-wing with their \u201choly cow\u201d.&nbsp; &nbsp; From these measurements, a composite performance polar curve was obtained for the various flap settings.<br>&nbsp;<br>The results confirmed the remarkable performance of the JS3, correlating very closely with the performance predictions of JS, with a maximum glide ratio touching the 57:1 mark.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cNow we have some work to do; update our brochures and website.&nbsp;\u201d&nbsp; Uys said smiling.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>\u201cThese flight tests show that the design effort paid off and the bar has been raised for the next generation of sailplanes.&nbsp;
